The start of 2002 saw efforts to recover as much of the unique thyristor equipment as possible from 87101 before it was cut up. The control cubicle, two banks of thyristors and the unique transformer were all saved from scrap.
Reward for our efforts came when one correspondent commented that we had utterly failed to save 87101, and that we should give up and send all the other locos for scrap, since we clearly weren't "preservationists". We couldn't find any record of him offering to help...
